It’s a real buzz when the press give our wines a rave – we know they’re high quality and exceptionally good value, but it’s always great to hear it from someone else.
PRESS COMMENTS - 2011
2008 Great Boulder Shiraz Cabernet Merlot Malbec
“One of the most complex and intriguing wines yet from Brown Hill. Lovely fragrances of cedar and floral red berry. On the palate, which is wonderfully seamless and refined, oak and fruit integrate perfectly with the fine ripe tannins. Has delicious sweet red fruit in the middle palate and silky plush finish. Classy wine.” 95 points, Ray Jordan’s 2011 WA Wine Guide
2008 Ivanhoe Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
“Beautifully perfumed notes on the nose with the leafy and red berry plus a nice sweet floral aroma. Medium-bodied and tightly held palate with classy fine grained oak holding it perfectly. Sweet red fruits on the middle palate with a fine long finish.” 92 points, Ray Jordan’s 2011 WA Wine Guide
2008 Perseverance Cabernet Merlot
“This is absolutely beautiful. Opens with a fragrant highly perfumed attack on the sensual zone in the brain. Then the palate delivers with such a deliciously sweet fruit fine tannin mix which takes the flavour to a very very long finish. Rich and densely concentrated yet with supreme poise and style.” 96 points, Ray Jordan’s 2011 WA Wine Guide
2010 Hannans Cabernet Sauvignon
“It’s déjà vu all over again - A favourite red still punches above its weight, as does a famous chenin blanc
I have to admit there is a bit of déjà vu in this column. Regular readers would recall me banging on about Brown Hill, a little producer just south of Margaret River township. In particular, it has generally been about the outstanding quality of a couple of its value-for-money wines. I’ve often described these wines as consistently the best value red wines from WA. Well, this week I reckon I’m prepared to go a step further. These wines could justify a claim to being the best value quality wines in the country.
This week I have featured the Brown Hill Hannan’s cabernet sauvignon 2010 which sells for $18 and which, if it carried a $30 price tag, wouldn’t be accused of being overpriced.
I am consistently amazed how this little dry-grown vineyard pumps out such deliciously appealing fruit that translates into these superbly structured, almost serious wines that must have so many other makers drooling with envy.
For me this super little cabernet should be in your winter shopping basket as a mandatory buy. Here is a cabernet sauvignon with a degree of sophistication and style. It’s quite firm with ripe assertive tannin and a decent lick of oak. The fruit is weighty but supple with a certain fleshy richness. Balance is the key here as it totes along to a pleasingly long finish.” 90 points, Ray Jordan, The West Australian August 2011
2010 Chaffers Shiraz
“Big bang for your buck here. Exotic spices and red to black fruit on the nose with a lovely cedary oak influence merges with that dark chocolate character. The palate is generous and soft with a deliciously long finish. One of the great value wines on the market." 92 points, Ray Jordan’s 2012 WA Wine Guide
Awarded "Best Value Wine Brown Hill Chaffers Shiraz 2010"
2009 Ivanhoe Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
“A cabernet of substantial presence. Bouquet of cedar, plum and black olive with deeper plum and chocolate influences. The palate is substantial with ripe assertive tannin, plenty of quality oak and a dense powerful palate loaded with flavour and richness. Finishes quite soft though the core ensures it is very long. Great for the cellar.” 94 points, Ray Jordan’s 2012 WA Wine Guide
2009 Bill Bailey Shiraz Cabernet
“From the outset this has been designed along massive proportions with the aim to maximise the fruit power of this dry grown vineyard. Rich concentrated and immensely powerful on the palate with ripe assertive tannin, substantial oak and that deep vein of opulent Shiraz and Cabernet. Yet after all that the finish is precise and seamlessly elegant.” 94 points, Ray Jordan’s 2012 WA Wine Guide
